Description of the Instrument

The greater portion case has been mostly refinished and refurbished with fruitwood, cherry, and walnut veneer trim on music rack and pedal lyre. Overall coloration is a deep red burgundy oil stain with a smoothly lacquered top finish. Plastic white keytops are in excellent condition. Action has been recently repaired, partly rebuilt, and reregulated to factory specs by a local RPT who is well qualified in the rebuilding/restoration trade. The original soundboard is intact, was cracked prior to reconditioning, and has been successfully repaired using the accepted toggle technique. Original Pin block is in like new condition, and tuning pins and strings are in excellent condition as well. Action keys, mechanisms, and felts are in excellent condition. A copy of the tech report is on file and is available to serious customers. No overt deferred maintenance is noted on the instrument for short term. According to the technician, the instrument has a powerful tone, and a very nice touch. This is a partially rebuilt instrument. Ole Bear spoke with the technician on 3/14/01.

Ole Bear's Report

The piano tech is a musician as well and indicates the instrument is fun to play, has a lot of tone, color, and depth, with a great deal of brilliance in the upper registers. This is a partial rebuild, not a full restoration, and is both presentable as well as functional and will give most pianists many years of service before a full restoration should be needed. Some of the restoration/rebuiding was several years ago, however, the current technician can document the work recently performed to serious customers.

Chick aficionados are out there at the current time, however, there are quite a few on the market at the present time. You can be rest assured that buyers who do their homework will acquire the best available Chicks on the market. This instrument should be especially nice for someone wanting a Steinway Large or Small A (6 to 6' 3" case size) or the larger B Steinway nearly 7', however, a comparable Steinway in this condition is going to run several thousand dollars more in cost.

Cost of the Instrument

Add up purchase price + Shipping and Insurance in Continental USA @ $1,500(+-) + tuning and plan on rebuilding it in 10-20+ years depending how hard you use it and take care of it. With the most recent price reduction, this instrument is now a more attractive investment than before!
