How to turn an Email Contact or Inquiry into a Listing....

These are three samples of Emails sent to me which make some sense, and are not "whatsitworthifisellit" trivia...take note:

Dear "Ole Bear" and Paula,

We have just moved to a 300 year old "log house" in PA from a huge townhouse
in New Orleans.  I have a John Broadwood Grand - Cuban Mahogany & rosewood
veneers, totally restored to full playing condition by Ken Eschete in 1997.
It is a magnificent instrument and a work of art.  The problem I have is no
room in our "new" home.  Even with a small addition, I will have space for a
spinet, but not the grand.

I would like to know your opinion on selling my John Broadwood.  It is in
climate-controlled storage and completely protected for the time being.

Thank you very much,
Sue

Dear Sue:

Sounds like a lovely critter. What was the level of restoration, what do you thing you have to have for it, can the rebuilder or local tech guru provide you a current level of its observed condition, and can you be patient to sell it?

Have the Canadian 1864 at $15,000 US, and a lovely reconditioned "original" which has had case refinished and a partial restoration, and I can give it away. It started like around $39,500 and have been reducing the beewhatsis out of it.

Just listed a restorable big broadwood from 1870s in LA (Loos-E-anna, not City of Angels) price at $7,500 and it needs to go to the restoration shop, and will probably bring from $x,xxx to $x,xxx.... will be sending out a generic email to all of my contacts soon as I update my others.htm or links page.

As you are so acutely aware... for most private folks.... who are not performing artists... a concert grand of any era takes up a helluva lot of room.  I have a Baldwin SD10, but I am a nutty Ole Bear. The larger vintage grand cases are still relatively soft in the market, probably due to this fact. Right now, they tend to be very good buys for folks who don't mind big hunky vintage, but I can foresee the day coming, when folks are going to start falling all over themselves trying to find any worthwhile vintage to put their legal tender fiat pieces of paper with ink on it, besides other antiques and heavy metal, aka Gold Eagles, Kruggerands, and Maple Leafs.

If you are not in a big hurry to sell the rascal, Ole Bear will bust his behind to get all I can in the marketplace. Being in PA or the NE is also a bonus for you locationally, as you are near NYC, the vintage capital of North America. You can follow the links in the email to how I do what I do. Good Afternoon.

Cheers and Best Regards,

Ole Bear

Hello Old Bear!

Really enjoyed your website.  Direct.  Honest.  Serious!

Have Sporer, Carlson and Berry Square Grand 85 Key, serial # 681.  Built
in 1861 in Owego, New York (I drove through the town on a side jaunt
during a business trip--not much there now.)   Case size 82"x41"x14" in
a rosewood finish.   Aquired in 1961 and restored.  Want to sell (moved
to smaller house, don't have a place for it).  Does it have value enough
for you to broker?

If fall's into your range of interest, will go ahead with local
appraisal, photos, etc.

Dear Paula & Gale,

I have inherited an antique, ornate, large baby grand. I received it  after my great
uncle passed away. He lived in Fl. and traveled around the world &
collected unusual & (expensive) finds. This piano is unusually beautiful & LARGE.
There were only 4 ever made by 2 friends approximately 110 yrs. ago. They're
names are GILDEMEESTER & KROGER and patented in New York. It's black
with ivory keys. I'm reluctent to sell it because of sentimentel reasons, but I don't
have room for it. It is gorgeous & in great condition.  I need some info about where
to go from here. I live in a small town (Ky.) and there is'nt  much of
an interest in classy antiques here (just $ 100,00.00 horses !! )...HA!
Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated. I would like to
sell it & I could send pictures if your interested.

Ole Bear's Reply:

Small company, probably bought out by Kohler & Campbell in 20th Century....probably low production with possibly high end units or unusual cases, or may have been a stencil piano at one time, not much in Pierce Piano Atlas #10. Please do send pix and get your technician's inspection/report if you are serious. Would love to have the listing.
